Advice for Buyers

8 most important things to do when looking at buying a cask of whisky.

  1. Conduct thorough due diligence on the company offering the cask, ensuring they’re registered as a UK-based entity and the presence of listed directors on companies house, matches those on their website.
  2. Ensure the team involved in selling casks have relevant backgrounds in whisky.
  3. Verify that the selling company possesses the requisite licenses and warehouse accounts to facilitate the lawful sale of whisky casks.
  4. Compare multiple companies and asses the pricing of casks of similar age offered by each.
  5. Check the brand or distillery name of the specific whisky being offered to ensure the product is authentic.
  6. Exercise caution when being promised disproportionately high returns on investment.
  7. Nobody can guarantee a long lifespan of a cask. Be cautious of any very long hold offers, even on newly filled casks. Typically, an offer over 20 years should be treated with caution and will greatly depend on the type of cask. More information on cask types and length of ownership can be found here.
